YOUTH KILLER

YOUTH KILLER

The tabacco industry is the Indonesian goverment’s large source of tax after oil, gas and timber. It is also the country’s second largest employmenr after the government service, which might explain why Indonesia’s tobacco laws are some of the most tolerant on earth.
The country is a heaven for companies like British American Tabacco (Lucky Strike, Ardath, Pall Mall), which produced some 20 billion cigarettes for the Indonesian market in 2000, and Philip Morris (Marlboro, Long Beach). There are no restrictions here on tobacco promotion through billboards, radio, print media, point of sale, or even sponsorship. Nor are there bans on salesto minors.
Many Indonesians star smoking at a young age. A 1985 Jakarta study showed that 49 per cent of boys age 10-14 were daily smokers, and all indications are that the numbers today is even higher. The Indonesian Health Departement estimates that nearly one quarter of ten years old boys, and 60 per cent of the male population over 15, smoke.
Abouth 57.000 Indonesians are known to die each year from tobacco use, according to the World Health Organization, but experts say this a very conservative, out of date estimate.
